SRC Spotlight: Kristina Chang, Recent Kodiak 100 Women’s Champion!

Each month, we’ll feature an inspiring runner making waves in the running community. This round, meet Kristina Chang, recent winner of the UTMB Kodiak 100-miler in Big Bear, CA. Kristina (she/her) is an athlete based in Golden, CO.

We dive into a few questions about her experience:

  • What were your biggest lessons learned in this race, both tactically and philosophically?
    • K: “Historically, I’ve manifested going out too easily in races. In 100-milers, the last 30 miles are really where the race begins, but there’s still room to go out faster. A lot of that stems from a lack of self-confidence. I was tired of feeling like I was constantly leaving something to be desired and not giving myself the opportunity to express what there is to express.”
  • You had a close friend, Lauren pace you during this race and many friends involved in training, crewing, and racing throughout the year. What role do pacers, crew, and community play in your journey (both for this race and others)?
    • K: “Friends play a key role in the journey. This year has been a tough year for me and I’ve experienced a lot of support from my friends and community — I wanted this race to be an expression of how others have supported me despite the setbacks.”
  • What were a few of the funniest parts of this experience and/or memories that made you smile?
    • K: “Seeing Jim Walmsley at an aid station was a highlight! I was also wigging out about how close the second place female was behind me; honestly, from an outsider’s perspective, that was probably hilarious. I took the lead with about 18 miles left, but that was a long time to go with someone on my tail. In addition, craving and eating bacon during the second half of the race was a funny aspect for a vegetarian.”
  • You talk a lot about the parallels between running and life, as well as keeping the momentum between other pursuits. Moving forward, what are some takeaways you’d like to incorporate into the months ahead?
    • K: “Similar to life, I see 100-milers as an opportunity to expand my mental toolkit and see them as a growth experience. You experience self-doubt, regretting decisions at certain times, needing to shift priorities, etc.”

Major shoutout to Kristina Chang for her passion, dedication, and kindness as a runner and a human! As a friend, she inspires me to cultivate meaningful relationships, give back to others, stay committed to one’s path, and remain resilient despite life’s challenges.
